You may think that poor quality sleep is just a normal part of the aging.
In fact, according to the National Sleep Foundation, changes to our sleep patterns are certainly part of the aging process. As we age, we may have more difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep.
This means that less time is spent in deep, dreamless sleep. Additionally, older people wake up an average of 3 or 4 times nightly.
Poor sleep, at any age, can contribute to low energy, brain fog, mood swings, weight gain, increased risk of illness, and other negative factors that can greatly contribute to reduced health and quality of life.
So, are these issues inevitable and do we just have to accept them as part of life?
To answer this, we must first explore WHY our sleep patterns are affected as we age.
Unfortunately, there is not one easy answer. Many factors can contribute to sleep concerns such as health issues, mental state, aches and pains, and the frequent need to urinate to name a few.
However, did you know that magnesium deficiency is one of the leading contributors to sleep issues? People with low magnesium often suffer from restless sleep, waking frequently during the night, so maintaining healthy magnesium levels often leads to deeper, more sound sleep. Low magnesium levels can also contribute to painful leg cramps and numerous other concerns.
Additionally, a breakthrough study conducted in 2012 reported that there are 3,751 human proteins that require magnesium to bind them in order to build, repair, and maintain the cells in your body.
Magnesium also acts as a helper molecule with the biochemical reactions continuously performed in your body by enzymes, and is involved in more than 600 reactions in your brain and body.
But most importantly, magnesium has shown to BE CRITICAL for sound, restful sleep!
But despite these amazing benefits of magnesium, most people are likely deficient in it. According to World Health Organization statistics, as many as 75% of the U.S. adult population do not meet the FDA’s daily recommendation of 420 mg.
So, when formulating our Sleep Regain solution for promoting sleep and relaxation, we started with 400mg of Magnesium.
Just how effective is magnesium in helping you sleep?
A recent double-blind, placebo, controlled study was conducted involving 100 participants between the ages of 51 and 85 that suffered from poor quality sleep.
Half the group was given 320mg of magnesium, while the other half was given a placebo.
Participants in the magnesium group not only experienced improved sleep, but they also showed lower levels of chronic inflammation, which is also linked to poor sleep.
Another, double-blind, clinical study of 43 older subjects were randomly assigned either 500mg of magnesium or a placebo for eight weeks.
Again, the magnesium group had significant improvements in sleep time, sleep quality, and fell asleep faster.
Do you also experience interruptions to your sleep because of painful nocturnal leg cramps or restless leg movement?
Well, the good news is that magnesium can help with that too!!!
A small clinical study was conducted on 10 patients suffering from sleep concerns because of periodic limb movements during sleep. Patients were given magnesium each evening for 4-6 weeks. At the end of the study, measured periodic limb movements decreased significantly and sleep efficiency improved significantly!
High-quality magnesium by itself would be quite beneficial. However, we went several steps further with this premium formulation…
We’ve also added three other premium nutrients, that when combined with magnesium, multiply its sleep and relaxation promoting effects many times over…
The first of these is…
Valerian has long been used as a sleep and relaxation aid. Research suggests that Valerian increases the availability of the neurotransmitter GABA, resulting in a calming effect on the body.
As a natural sedative, it is also beneficial for pain relief and muscle relaxation.
A double-blind, placebo controlled study was conducted with 128 participants. One-third of the group was given 400mg of valerian root, another one-third was given an alternative treatment, while the remaining third was given a placebo.
Compared to the other groups, participants in the valerian group experienced a statistically significant improvement for the time needed to fall asleep, sleep quality, and number of nighttime awakenings. Additionally, these results were more pronounced for the participants who identified themselves as poor sleepers.
Another double-blind, placebo controlled study measured longer-term effects in 121 participants with documented sleep concerns. Half the group was given valerian root, while the other half received a placebo for 28 days.
After 14 days, the valerian group showed significant improvement in falling asleep, sleep quality and overall well-being, while the placebo group showed no significant improvement. The differences in improvement between the valerian and the placebo group increased between assessments at 14 and 28 days.
Many more studies, support these benefits. This is why we’ve added 400mg of Valerian Root Powder.
Another key ingredient found in Sleep Regain is..
Chamomile is widely regarded as a mild-tranquillizer and sleep-inducer. These relaxation benefits may be attributed to its high concentration of the antioxidant flavonoid apigenin, which binds to benzodiazepine receptors in the brain.
A recent double-blind, placebo controlled study of 80 postnatal women with poor sleep quality was conducted over a two-week period, with half the group receiving chamomile and the other half a placebo. The chamomile group reported significantly better sleep quality.
Another double-blind, placebo controlled study of 60 elderly nursing home residents suffering from low quality sleep found that those supplementing with chamomile experienced significantly better sleep quality than those in the placebo group.
Plus one more superstar helper…
Additionally, Sleep Regain contains lemon balm due to its sedative, calming benefits. Combining lemon balm with valerian may help relieve restlessness and sleep concerns even more.
A double-blind, placebo controlled study was conducted with 100 menopausal women aged 50-60 who suffered from sleep concerns. Half the group received lemon balm, while the other half received a placebo. The lemon balm group reported a significant improvement in their quality of sleep.
Another randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind clinical study revealed the combination of valerian and lemon balm significantly improved reported quality of sleep.
